BRESLAU, 1609 (ANTEDATED) Sebastian was the son of Thomas Rauch II of Breslau - in what is now Poland - who worked in the early-mid 18th century (label is antedated). A fine example with a rich, chestnut brown finish and responsive, focused tone. This instrument is of the Stainer school, Tyrolean influenced, and displays the characteristic dark finish of Rauch, stained and varnished to enhance flame. Ribs of beautiful flame, and a two-piece back with ascending flame. There is a secure volute repair on the grafted scroll and a button graft on back. No cracks in the bassbar and soundpost areas. Also bears a repair label from Helming Foss, Finland, 1906. Quality of sound, especially on the lower strings, is amazingly mellow, responsive and rich as befits an instrument of this vintage.
