GIOVANNI DOLLENZ – TRIESTE, 1802
A fine copy, probably German made, with outstanding resonant and highly figured maple back scroll and ribs. Dollenz, like Gofriller and Techler, were originally Germans who migrated to Italy where they set up their ateliers and fully assimilated their violin building methods and culture with their new home. Dollenz settled in Trieste, at the crest of the Adriatic Sea on what is now the border between Italy and Slovenia.
There is a post crack on back that has been securely repaired with an inlaid patch from the inside. It has not affected the bold, robust tone of this handsome violin.
